SomethingOnSunday - SCBWI Library Day

Yesterday I was able to spend my entire day at the library! Best of all I was joined by SCBWI illustrators & writers. And even better that kids, teens and parents came to enjoy the day ---LIBRARY DAY!

Kirsten Carlson
Kids fell in love with Kirsten's books and had a blast learning to draw various sea animals

look at all those kids (and adults too!)

It was an interactive bunch!

and Kirsten got results

Next up was Daniel Jennewein
He taught about three different kinds of buffalo. The Asian water buffalo, the American Bison and the buffalo who stars in the books by Audrey Vernick, illustrated by Daniel.

Next he took requests - he took ALL kinds of requests
including --- Buffalo drum roll please ----

Please draw a horse jumping over a house with a mole hanging onto the horse's tail for its own dear life.
Yes, that was a request from a young child and she did say "for its own dear life" and it was so cute that Daniel just had to draw it!

We were all sad that the one and only Jen K Blom was not able to attend. Tracie Miller the librarian stepped in. Tracie read the first two chapters of POSSUM SUMMER and the local TV station recorded her! POSSUM SUMMER draws you in from page one with a feisty main character who manages to be tender and tough at the same time.

Juliane Kayser gave a great TV interview

She also read from her book and told how her research added power to her fiction

I ended the day with a presentation for teens about creating characters. I was thrilled that adults and younger kids joined us too.

My thanks to Kirsten Carlson, Illustrator Coordinator for SCBWI Germany, Tracie L. Miller librarian in Stuttgart, the entire Stuttgart library staff and SCBWI Germany for running such a great event and for including me. It was a wonderful day!!!

  3. I'd have been so sad NOT to see a horse jumping over a house with a mole hanging onto the horse's tail for its own dear life. Thanks for the great post--sounds like a wonderful day!

  4. I love "for its own dear life." What could be more important? I know the kids had a good time, not to mention the adults.

My local library is getting a complete make over and has been closed for several months. They are supposed to be finished by November but I don't see how it can all be done in time.

  5. Great to see KIDS included at this SCBWI event - those imaginative critters to whom we cling - for our own dear lives - as authors and illustrators!
